Planning Groups Make Strides in Finalizing Plans

PRESS RELEASE

Los Angeles:  Rolling up their sleeves and plunging into an open space process where everyone gets a say, this year's Citywide Congress of Neighborhoods Planning Committee members and Neighborhood Council stakeholders have made great strides over the last couple of months in determining the content, structure and funding of the Congress that will be held in City Hall on October 11, 2008.

Thus far, the most major decision the working groups have made is this year's Congress will be focused on how to “cut through red tape.”  Work group participants stressed the idea Neighborhood Council leaders should know whom to contact at City Hall for effective solutions to neighborhood issues and concerns. They were in accord that the City should engage in “speeded up” communications with Neighborhood Councils in order to ensure that solutions to community problems are timely and meet community needs.

At their most recent meeting on September 3, working group participants determined categories and outcomes for Congress events; proposed workshop and event leaders; formulated a preliminary budget; discussed outreach methods and strategies; created the Congress floor plan; and agreed upon funding mechanisms, which will include direct contact with Neighborhood Councils throughout the City for funding assistance.

Council members and stakeholders who want to follow the progress of Congress planning sessions are invited to access the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE) website at www.lacityneighborhoods.com and select the Citywide Congress and Neighborhoods and Mayor's Budget Day tab. Information on the dates and times of future meetings will be provided at that website address. The public is invited to attend.
