Hi Bill--
Thank you for meeting with the community last Saturday for our first meeting of the informal Cleland Park Advisory Board. We especially appreciate your effort on a non-work day. (I'm sure that these meetings will be much more infrequent in the future as these community concerns are addressed.)
I would like to reiterate the issues we covered and ones that we would like follow up on in our next meeting with you.
1. LIGHTING AND PARK SECURITY
ACTION:
a. City will posted OPS phone number on sign.
b. The community will post info regarding regularly scheduled use of the park for organized sports. |
There was general consensus that lighting at night was not required with the exception of the west end of the park. The homeowner adjacent to the west side of the park, Dawnia, is trying to install light-sensors on her property to shine on that part of the park.
There was consensus that security problems in the park (guys hanging out) occur more in the late afternoon rather than at night. The meeting decided that lights would attract more night activity to the park.
To deter unsavory types from hanging out in the afternoon, the community will encourage more usage of the field for organized sports.
For park security problems (e.g. fights) you can also contact OPS Operations Park Services 213-978-4670, in addition to contacting police.
2. LATCHING GATES AND STREET SECURITY
ACTION:
a. The City will have cost of installing 2 latching gates and chain-linked fence gate.
b. CD 14 office will follow up on contacting Dept. of Transportation regarding traffic |
There was debate amongst the group regarding having latching gates at the main entrance and a regular chain-link fence open at the drive through access point. The debate was between issues of child safety (an unattended child wandering through the currently open gate on to a street with heavy traffic) vs. the park implicitly turning into a dog park.
Any efforts to address slowing down traffic with signs, speed bumps, etc., will be addressed by City Dept. of Transportation. Councilman Huizar's office will follow up.
3. SANDBOX PLAY AREA
ACTION:
| The community will establish a "Park Supply Box" at neighbor Dawnia's house that will include a rake/screener for the sandbox. Funds for the supply box will come through ASNC or CD 14. |
The community was concerned about possibility of sharp objects unintentionally left in the sandbox. Currently, the problem seems to be one more of anticipation rather than actually finding objects. The sandbox gets screened once a week and raked daily.
4. GRAFFITI AND PARK MAINTENANCE
ACTION:
a. The City will add the Graffiti Hotline phone number to the existing signs.
b. The City will install "Pick Up Dog Poop" signs.
c. The City will place a request for pruning Sycamore trees
d. The community will stock the "Park Supply Box" with graffiti cleaner.
e. The community will install IKEA-style container for recycled bags for dog owners. |
Park maintenance (minus graffiti clean up) is by Daniel Hernandez (aka "Daniel's Tires on El Paso") Daniel can be reached at city office. Any problems with maintenance, the community should contact Janice Galvan at the city 323-255-0370 and she will contact Daniel.
Graffiti Hotline 213-485-5054
5. FOLLOW UP MEETING & CONTACTS
ACTION:
a. The community would like to have a follow up meeting in February 2009, preferably the second Saturday of the month, Feb 14th from 10-11 AM.
b. In addition to the action items listed above, we would like the topic of "public restrooms" to be on the agenda.
c. The community coordinator for informal Cleland Park Advisory Board is Jack Paulson. He can be reached at jackpaulson@mac.com. Also, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me, too. |
Thanks again.
Best wishes,
Paula Sirola
