Adjournment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7:00 p.m. - Monterey Adult Day Health Care Center The July regular meeting of the Hermon Local Issues Committee of the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council (ASNC) was attended by 57; five new ASNC stakeholders were registered at the opening. -- During an extended public comments period, Hermon stakeholders expressed a number of public safety and traffic-related concerns, including: illegal parking next to the Monterey Road median at night; speeding on Monterey; regular running of stop signs and/or red lights on Kendall and Via Marisol; and suspected drug deals taking place on Ebey Avenue below the former Pacific Christian school site. LAPD officers present took notes. Stakeholders were also told the Pacific property would be temporarily used by the Los Angeles International Charter School that lost its lease in Eagle Rock in 2006, while Bethesda Christian University seeks a conditional use permit to operate as a college there. -- Hermon stakeholders were encouraged to apply to fill at-large vacancies on the 2007 ASNC board. -- District 14 field staff members from Councilmember José Huizar's office brought updates on several projects and requests from the Hermon community, many of which originated at past Local Issues meetings. An additional city staff meeting involving Bureau of Engineering and Parks personnel will take place this month regarding the Via Marisol stroller pathway to Bushnell Way proposed in early 2006, to assist school students and their families; badly needed sidewalk repairs for the 500 block of Kendall Avenue and several locations on Via Marisol and Avenue 60 have been scheduled for this fiscal year; a suggested shopping cart retrieval program for CD14 patterned after a pilot program in another district as been referred to CM Huizar's chief of staff; Animal Services has agreed to arrange for the trapping of feral cats near Bushnell Way Elementary school -- local residents will assist in the monitoring of traps; placement of benches on a Via Marisol median near Lomitas to give Telacu walkers a resting point is pending approval by the city attorney; the city's department of transportation is looking at the blind curve and covered sidewalks in the 6300 block of Monterey. Field staff also announced several districtwide events and programs including a "no secrets" workshop for parents to help them protect their children from sexual abuse, and a series of upcoming economic development charrettes in larger CD14 communities. -- LAPD Senior Lead Officer John Pedroza, accompanied by two officers specifically assigned to deal with transients. Drugs, and vice in Hollenbeck, attended and brought updates on public safety issues. In reference to the evening's action item suggesting ASNC oppose an application for a liquor permit, vice officers confirmed that crime rates rise in an area after new liquor sales establishments are opened. -- After some discussion, a motion to forward a request asking the full ASNC board to oppose a business owner's request for a liquor sales permit at a retail business at 5526 Monterey Road was approved without opposition. Stakeholders also asked CD14 staff to request that Councilmember Huizar oppose the permit. The next meeting will be held at the same location, Thursday, September 13, 2007, at 7 p.m. The meeting adjourned at approximately 8:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Joseph Riser, Chair 7/21/07
