The May regular meeting of the ASNC/Hermon Local Issues Committee was attended by 31. In combination with a smaller meeting at Monterey Trailer Park the next weekend, seven new stakeholders were registered.

-- LAPD Senior Lead Officer John Pedroza, recently reassigned as the SLO for the Hermon area, introduced himself to the community, took general questions about police matters, discussed the ramifications of the recent incidents in Macarthur Park , and provided contact information.

-- Rev. Sung Keun Park, director of planning and development for Bethesda Christian University (new owner of the property that last housed the failed Pacific Christian school) brought greetings and explained some of the university's history. The school, now located in Anaheim , is in the process of applying for a permit from the city to operate as a school at 625 Coleman Avenue in Hermon. Rev. Park requested that residents sign a "neighboring property owners consent form" showing support. In the near term, the school will house some departments on the hilltop, in existing buildings. Longer term, they plan on tearing down at least some of the current buildings in order to erect a 30,000 square foot school building, a 15,000 square foot chapel, and administrative offices.

-- In public comments, Hermon stakeholders were asked to write or e-mail the Hollenbeck division of LAPD -- requesting more police presence, were polled by the Hermon "Clean Team" to see if there was enough interest and need to hold a mid-year bulky item drop-off on June 2, and heard details of Lummis Day events planned for June 3.

-- In updates on past Local Issues meetings, stakeholders were informed that Hermon has again been assigned a new field deputy by District 14 Councilmember Jose Huizar. Marcella Cortez, working from the El Sereno field office, is the new contact and will be looking into the status of a number of requests and formal ASNC motions forwarded there over the past year.

-- After viewing a brief video on the "Wonder of Reading" program has built a new library for Bushnell Way Elementary School , members of the Hermon community were asked to volunteer as reading mentors beginning next fall – giving an hour of their time ever 1-2 weeks. One new volunteer joined a number of others from the community already pledged to assist.

-- A motion to forward a request to the full ASNC board asking for support for the placement of permanent ceremonial street markers identifying two city Historic-Cultural Monuments in Hermon was approved by stakeholders with no opposition.

The next meeting will be held at the same location, Thursday, July 12, 2007, at 7 p.m. The meeting adjourned at approximately 8:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Joseph Riser, Chair
