ARROYO SECO NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

Hermon
Local Issues Committee

Minutes -- Regular meeting of 1/10/07
7:00 p.m., Monterey Adult Day Health Care Center

The first regular meeting of 2007 for the ASNC/Hermon Local Issues Committee was attended by approximately 41. One new stakeholder was registered during the meeting.

-- ASNC President Jim Thompson called for nominations for Hermon Local Issues chair for 2007 and declared Joseph Riser to have won the position after the only other nominee from the floor declined.

-- District 14 City Councilmember José Huizar brought greetings, introduced staff member Ricardo Monroy -- who is just beginning to work with Hermon and other communities from his El Sereno field office, and provided updates on city issues and projects affecting Hermon and other parts of CD14. During a Q & A period with CM Huizar, updates were provided on several key local issues, including:

    ·  The attempted sale of the historic Monterey Trailer Park, as a condominium development site (an L.A. Times reporter was told by realtors that it is now off the market).

    ·  Status of the former Pacific Christian school site -- marketed for high-density development for the past two years. (A Hermon Church boardmember provided an informal update, later confirmed by the pastor via ASNCalert, that the entire 7-plus acre site is being sold to Bethesda Christian University, a small private college now in Orange County.

-- In further updates, it was announced that the city's Dept. of Transportation had agreed to remove the "no right turn on red" sign at Avenue 60/Monterey, and volunteers were recruited for a committee to explore options in reducing the number of abandoned shopping carts in Hermon.

-- By a show of hands, the second Thursday of odd-numbered months was selected for 2007 meetings.

-- After some discussion, stakeholders unanimously approved communicating to CD14 staff Hermon's go-ahead support for installing bright deterrent lighting for the arroyo-bank location off Via Marisol, at the freeway, now used as a transient encampment/illegal drug sales area.  Additional suggestions were offered for keeping the site visible and safe - especially for school children walking from Highland Park.

-- Stakeholders also approved asking the ASNC to provide (matching) funds to purchase and install two benches on the Via Marisol/Lomitas median, creating a rest area for people walking uphill from Monterey Plaza - especially those from the senior living complex near the entry to Monterey Hills.

The next meeting will be held at the same location, Thursday, March 8, 2007, at 7 p.m.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 8:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Joseph Riser, Chair
